I noticed in today's paper that Warren Jeffs was convicted and sentenced to two terms of 5 to life for his rape of teenage cousins a few years ago. Anyone who doubts the severity of this issue in the Mormon church must read Jon Krakauer's Under the Banner of Heaven, your views will be changed.

I find this line to be disturbing, "Under Utah law, a 14-year-old can consent to sex in some circumstances." Ummmm, what circumstances?? I read about 3/4's of Under the Banner of Heaven several years ago. Very interesting.

It is a great read. Krakauer is the man.

Warren Jeffs is really just practicing much of what early LDS leaders taught and practiced themselves. And that is what’s interesting about the LDS’s official, modern position on polygamy. While the organization in Salt Lake City loves to separate itself from “fundamentalists” like Jeffs, it’s beyond dispute that the doctrine of polygamy is still in Mormon scriptures (see Doctrine and Covenants, section 132) and was permitted and practiced historically. Yes, it’s true that Mormons today are instructed by the organization not to practice polygamy during this life. But it’s also true that the organization teaches polygamy will be permitted and practiced in heaven. Interesting indeed!

That said, what is most troubling about Mormonism is their doctrines relating to God and salvation. Those doctrines will forever separate Mormonism from historic, orthodox, Biblical Christianity.
