I think Sojourner's takes this a little far:

...Abram and Sarai, the mother and father of Israel, are now planted in my imagination as possible protestors and rabble rousers. Their act of potential civil disobedience is found in Genesis. Abram's welcome of three strangers is the quintessential hospitality story in the Bible. It is marked by a flurry of activity as Abram rushes about ordering food, cleaning up the tent and entertaining the mysterious newcomers.

But Abram welcomes the three without knowing where they came from or where they are going. He asks for no identification and requires no answers about the strangers' country of origin. As such, if Abram lived in the U.S. in 2007, these actions would have made him a potential crime suspect. If the strangers turned out to be undocumented workers a bill passed by the House in December would have allowed law enforcement to arrest the holy couple for harboring illegal aliens.

I see this as a situation, at first glance, of taking a biblical example out of context for the purpose of proving one's point, the Religious Right doest his all the time and the left bemoans it, now the left is getting savvy at the same thing.

I'm all for people coming to America to make a better life for themselves, I just want it done legally, and it sounds like that may mean the laws need to be changed, I'm fine with that.

when i was @ the christian comm. devel. assoc. conference in indi, i got to hear a lot of this talk. now, i agree in a lot of ways with what they are saying. in fact, i really think we should loosen our borders, allowing more people. now, i don't have a fully flushed plan, so don't ask for it.
but, i also think that we often go too far on applying biblical stories to our own situation. the political situation of today has little to do with what abram was doing. but, i think he serves as an effective model of how we should behave and treat people on a personal level, in our country. of course, i also think we need to challenge systems that are unfair, inappropriate, or immoral. what are we saying when economics is the reason behind everything. how many times have we heard "they are a drain on the economy". ugh. they also contribute to our economy, our society, our lives. they are human beings and should be treated as such. now, i also think that they should work to become citizens, which would eliminate all the bs about not contributing (taxes). of course, by purchasing, as i've said before, people pay sales tax, and into the system.

isn't it funny that the people who always seem to clamor for lower taxes, are generally the ones bitching about other people not paying taxes? shouldn't they want those people to not pay taxes too? are the libertarians using this sort of argument? i doubt it, but who knows in this screwy world.

now, the bill being discussed, which has now been gutted of most of the harsher points, did seek to make aiding an illegal a felony. so, any xian org. or person that provided food, without getting proper i.d. for each person, could have been screwed. seems extreme, but could have been a very real possibility.
