Today's update from the classroom:

Student A was trying to draw a circle next to Student B. Student A is not a good artist, butchered the circle, and was asked by Student A: "What is that?" asked Student A. Student B responded, "A circle." Responded Student A, "No, where did you learn to draw circles from, crack-whore Barney?"

Crack whore Barney...that's a new one.

Ahh the joys of being a high school teacher! I feel your pain...at least your students aren't trying to date you.

nice. hey, what do you teach? do you teach art?

if so, we are getting closer and closer to being doppelgangers. i've got my teaching credential to teach h.s. art, although i decided i didn't want to be a part of that system and went into full time ministry before seminary.

We are moving closer to that point...

I teach At-Risk, my degree was in Spec Ed. I know what you mean about not wanting to be a part of the system, but it serves me well for the time being.

Congrats on the seminary completion, another thing we have in common.

it's nice to be done. congrats to you as well.

i did my student teach, and had a chance @ full time paid ministry. so, i took it for many reasons.

one of those was that art was/is a dumping ground for students. what you on't like your class? i'll put you in this art class.

yeah, that doesn't really help when the teach is trying to pour his passion into students and 1/3 to 1/2 of the students really don't want to be there at all.

so, work somewhere where kids maybe want to be there (most of my kids weren't church kids that were sick of it)? definately.

but, alas, the job changed, my opinion on youth ministry changed, and i got quite burnt.

now, i'm ready to work where God is leading. but in the meantime, i'm looking to make some ends.

Art, a dumping ground? I swear I've never said to a student, "You need a class to pass to graduate, how about art?" Scouts honor :)

We are the ultimate dumping ground, but at least we have a limited amount of students to dump on us, you have to qualify for the program to get dumped in to us. However, just yesterday one of the guidance staff called and said, "We have a new student and don't know where else to put her, she'll be in your math class." Okay.

I think youth ministry can sound cool, but I don't think I could handle it.
